That which stands in the way is the way. Pema Chodron
The Middle East is a seething cauldron of diverse values. It’s complexity extends back thousands of years. Added to its inherent complexity is the tampering of Imperial Colonists, right up to George Bush and his band of ‘keen to make millions from the spoils’ men.
What I am going to write about is the quite wonderful way the Universe works…
The Goddess Isis was an ancient Egyptian Goddess of Protection, the Queen of Heaven, a friend of slaves, sinners and artisans. She was revered right through to the Greco Roman era. Plutarch describes Isis as “a goddess exceptionally wise and a lover of wisdom, to whom, as her name at least seems to indicate, knowledge and understanding are in the highest degree appropriate… .”
In evoking Isis we are evoking the very antidote to what we most need.
This is no accident. Wisdom, compassion, care for the sinners and slaves is needed now. Even compassion for the people who feel the only way through is to behead, subjugate, terrorize…to have women be regarded as non people.
We must also look to our own lack of wisdom and compassion. Our own fundamentalist attitudes. The way we treat women, even unconsciously. We are far from being whole in the way we treat others, including women. (And the way women treat men)
This is a time for deep inner examination. To call on the Goddess Isis to offer us the wisdom we have been missing.
In my own life I see the places I am harsh to judge, others and myself. Cruel in my criticism. Mercenary in my cutting down a fellow human. In my own way I have beheaded. Eviscerated.
That which stands in the way is the way. My own judgement, cruelty, finger pointing, directed rage…stands in the way. As does yours. As does all of us. Not just the many diverse groups of seriously angry (mostly men) around the world. (It is kind of curious that it is the men in the world who are pissed and then go out and kill and maim…while the women are treated as objects of exploitation..surely it is the women who should be mad?…just goes to show how out of balance we are.)
I am not naive. There is a time to fight. But fighting is our first reflex, and if we have any respect for history, we would know that this pathway is extremely likely to come at great great cost (trillions of dollars and millions of lives to begin..).
Have we learned from history? I think not.
Isis is being evoked. This is a great Cosmic joke…Let us heed the call of the Goddess. There are worse actions we can take and far less wise ones.
