Respond to data not self talk – taking bold action

Time to take that big action. Get beyond the ideas stage and get something into the world. But your self talk is very compelling and keeping you from starting.

I need to have more certainty about x.

Maybe if I did Y it would be better.

I am not sure how to do this.

This is not perfect enough yet.

I need more…

I need less..

This might go wrong…

What ever your conversation, it is generally set to repeat cycle. For days, weeks, months….years (a tragedy that happens all too often)….

If we were able to record every self talk conversation we have I would imagine it would be truly scary.

Here is what to do if you are stuck in this cycle. It’s really simple.

Just start. Anywhere. That’s right. Anywhere. Take the first step.

Take action. Now. Get something out into the world. It really doesn’t matter what action. Just start.

Then watch the data that comes back. This is the real feedback. The world will tell you if you are on course or off course. The stuff in your head is mostly made up stories.

It’s not starting that kills ideas.

PS. The idea for this article was inspired by listening to a conversation between Jonathan Fields and Rae Hoffman on Jonathan’s wonderful Good Life Project. If you haven’t seen it, check it out.

PPS. In case you were ever wondering, I often write blog posts to remind me…so yes, there is something right now I need to just start.
